Katie Moody Taunts Torrey Smith and Becomes The Most Hated Person in Baltimore (Final Update 8-26)

@katiebrady12 is the most hated person in Baltimore

The Baltimore Ravens defeated the New England Patriots last night in Baltimore, MD with the final score of 31-30. The win didn’t come without any controversy however as Justin Tucker’s game winning field goal soared just above the upright. The replacement referees ruled the kick good and according to the rules, the call is not reviewable. Did we get away with one? Maybe.

Torrey Smith, a Baltimore Ravens wide receiver, played Sunday night with a heavy heart as his younger brother Tevin was killed in a motorcycle accident just before midnight on Saturday. The Ravens left the decision to play up to Smith and he decided to knowing that Tevin would have wanted him to play. Smith finished the game with 127 yards and 2 touchdowns in a performance dedicated to his brother.

From the Baltimore Sun,

I didn’t know how I would hold up. I was telling my teammates a minute ago that this is new territory for me personally. I never really had to deal with a death in the family, let alone my brother. It’s part of life and, due to my teammates and my family and friends, I’ll be able to get over it.

No matter where your allegiance may lie, moments of triumph through such adversity should be celebrated. Smith’s character is unquestionable. Human life is more important than football.

Katie Moody Taunts Torrey Smith

Katie Moody is a Sr. Administrative Coordinator at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. She also earned her Bachelors and Masters from JHU in Political Science and Fiction Writing. Katie is obviously a very intelligent person, except for when it comes to social media.

Her twitter account @katiebrady12 (now private) sent these tweets out after the game,

Yes Katie that was too soon. It’s not funny to joke about another person’s brother dying.

The Internet Retaliates

Lesson to Learn

If you say something, it’s permanent. It doesn’t matter if it’s a tweet, facebook status or you’re giving a speech about how 47% of Americans are entitled and pay no taxes. It only takes a second to take a screenshot or record a video.

I’m not trying to limit anyone’s freedom of speech, but there are some things that you just don’t joke about. Encouraging an NFL player to phone their dead brother after they beat your favorite football team is probably one of them.

Note: I didn’t submit that email to Hopkins and don’t advocate the action.

Updates: The story has been picked up by USA TodayThe Baltimore Sun, and mentioned on various ESPN radio shows.

Dennis O’Shea for John’s Hopkins to the Baltimore Sun:

“Our deepest sympathies are with Torrey Smith and his family. The social media comment that made light of the Smith family’s loss represented the thoughts of one individual. It does not in any way represent the Johns Hopkins community.”

A generic but necessary statement to address the issue. Social media in the workplace is a difficult topic and I’m not sure what the JHU policy is.

Torrey Smith announced on twitter that he has created The Tevin Jones Memorial Scholarship Fund in honor of his brother.

Update (9/25/12)

I just got off the phone with The Baltimore Sun and they asked me a ton of questions about the story for an article in tomorrow’s paper.

Final Update (9/26/12)

Beyond the importance of what is and isn’t appropriate to release on social media, we all have things to learn from this story. Please know that it is never okay to wish any sort of harm or violence on someone else. Katie has released a statement apologizing for her actions and this is the end. Please leave her alone and let’s all move on.

“I profoundly regret my thoughtless, tasteless, and completely inappropriate comment, and I deeply lament the pain that it has caused. I would like to apologize to Torrey Smith, his family, friends, and everyone who was distressed by what I said. I should have been offering sympathy and compassion for such a terrible and heart-breaking loss. I set high standards for myself as a person and as a fan, and I fell short of these standards. This was a horrible lapse in judgment that I will always regret. I am truly sorry.”

I think that proposed email is too tame and advocate forwarding this information to any place where she seeks employment in the future.

WOW!! I’m a diehard Steelers fan (DIEHARD) but even I was rooting for The Ravens last night. First they lose Art – then Torrey Smith loses his lil bro. And thru it ALL – The Ravens ARE Ballin’ Hard! Katy – from one JHU employee to another – PLEASE APOLOGIZE asap! Its NEVER in good taste as a Hopkins Employee or as a person to taunt anyone’s lost of a loved one hon. Never!

    • http://whiteraverrafting.com/ Ben Hebert

At no time should you ever wish ill on someone’s health or family. Attacking someone after a personal loss like is dumbfounding to me.

No one should lose their job, I just want to address that this is an issue and we should come together to make sure it doesn’t happen again.

      • http://www.facebook.com/paul.geary.9674 Paul Geary

Then what is your motive for putting up her picture? Other than wishing ill upon her, or at least increasing the risk that ill will befall her. She said something repugnant; you did something repugnant.

I just aggregated what was posted through my social feeds into a blog post.

katie brady 12 you suck bitch….i hope karma comes kick you in ya ass hard you just ass salty as that dirt ring on the back of ya neck…..ctfu get over ya self…that was fucked up wat you said but remember KARMA IS A BITCH.

  • One confused person

Just because someone posted something in poor taste, does not mean they should lose their job. That’s insane. I don’t understand why people think that when someone says something they should automatically lose their job. What sense does that make?

    • LuckBALady

You, sir/ma’am, are so right. Miss Moody should be able to keep her job and deal everyday with the fact that people know she’s an @$$.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1075009732 Tina Hampshire Mark

IGNORANCE at its best! Katie needs a degree in RESPECT! Obviously you never lost a loved one or if you have, you simply don’t have a heart!

  • the truth bringer
    • karma gonna getcha

Change your name all you want, were still gonna find yo ass.

  • http://www.facebook.com/brokenangel23 Crystal Jarmer

I’m a steelers fan as well and its hard losing people close to you. She shouldn’t have put that on any media site because karma is a pain in the butt and it will come back on her. I’m at a loss of words for that post she put and torrey smith played his heart out and he got the win for his brother

  • http://www.facebook.com/livnlif.4me Nonna BlackandPurple AllDay

I don’t think that this ignorant woman should lose her job however as a JHU employee myself, I am completely appalled that she would have showed such disregard for the mourning of one’s very recently deceased family member. At this point, I don’t believe her apology will hold any weight. I do hope that she never has to feel the pain and suffering that Torrey and his family (and anyone else that’s lost a loved one) has to endure. This pain has no expiration date and those hurtful comments don’t either. Ignorance at it’s finest is an understatement!

    • One confused person

Agreed, what she said was absolutely in poor taste and had no compassion. That doesn’t mean she should lose her job, it wasn’t even related to her job nor was the remark made at work or something else crazy. This simply was in response to football and being ridiculous.

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=658355017 Jan Greenhawk

The fact that she is an administrator of a school of medicine makes this even worse. She should know how people suffer when loved ones die. I would be afraid to trust this woman’t judgement.

    • http://whiteraverrafting.com/ Ben Hebert

Thank you for this comment. It was elegantly stated and you got your point across without making any threats or attacks on her character. I wish ill will on no one and hope you have a blessed day.

    • http://www.facebook.com/steffibugg Stefanie Studda Step Hill

I completely agree. I was going to say exactly that about the hurtful
manner of the comments. She’s definitely feeling some hurtful
      backlash…You, Nonna, should be a diplomat… 🙂

  • Get A Life

Why do you people care so much? Was what she said in poor taste? Absolutely. Did it affect your life in any way, shape or form? Absolutely not. This also has nothing to do with her job and/or personal life, and contacting her employer to try to get her fired is ridiculous.

    • http://www.facebook.com/michael.a.hicks.50 Michael A Hicks Jr.

That’s fucked up plain and simple though. What kind of person goes and says some shit like that? win or lose There’s some things that just shouldn’t be said.

    • Get some morals

when you’re in a position of power, or any position anywhere, any classless or tasteless comment can be used against you. Especially if you’re stupid enough to write it on twitter. If she is really that stupid, she deserve every ounce of flack she’s going to get for this. A lot of people are evil, but the smart ones find a way to hide it.

  • Irritated

I will never understand how someone can be so cold . . what if it was someone she was fond of . . . Oh well some people cant handle losing . . I think that she shouldnt deal with people period, especially at JHU where they CARE about people. . . .KARMA always serves you what you ask for, as for her apologizing, once its said you cant take it back . . .

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=658355017 Jan Greenhawk

Freedom of speech doesn’t mean that there are no consequences for saying something stupid. If you say something stupid and disgusting like this there will be consequences. Her consequences are that she has exposed herself as a base, common, heartless, classless, cruel and stupid douche bag. Perhaps she should phone someone that still gives a damn about her….oh wait…..

    • http://whiteraverrafting.com/ Ben Hebert

I think the consequences are that this story has been made public and now people know. What happens or if she changes is up to them… I am hoping she contacts me with an apology.

  • http://www.facebook.com/michael.a.hicks.50 Michael A Hicks Jr.

Smh just as ray rice said Karma! fire her ass who says she like that grow the fuck up.

  • http://twitter.com/SharSEsq Sharvey

OMG, She said she recieved complaints on her job, she should be fired. Shes a sick individual. I also sent a tweet to her regarding her pitiful behavior.

  • justsomegirl

Stupid comment? yes. Did Katie hurt Torrey Smith’s feelings anywhere near as much as you’re all hurting hers right now? No way. He probably couldn’t care less what some random girl wrote on Twitter. But you’re all the one’s ruining someone’s life right now. Karma?

    • http://twitter.com/BaltoBluesMan Spence

Actually, if anyone ruined Katie’s life, it was Katie. She’s getting nothing different than she gave, so if the reaction of people she doesn’t know is hurtful to her, she should have thought twice before her initial post…

    • kelly

you probably are her or know her. No way is it ok or ooh he doesnt give a shi* that she says that an excuse for anyone to say that to him or any grieving person!! She needs to understand what she says before saying something so stupid and heartless!! and that karma salad is all hers she ordered it herself!!!

  • justsomeboy

Words hurt more than just feelings, and everyone, including Katie should have repercussions for their words and actions. She made a choice that turned out to have life altering effects. When you make your opinions public, you allow the public to judge them… and her judgement is harsh!

  • J

Freedom of Speech is protection for the government. Private citizens, businesses, news agencies? Feel free to throw limits all you want.

    • J

      Whoops. Make that “for” “from”.

  • http://twitter.com/PauleeWalnuts PO

Let her keep her job. Her life is ruined either way. Pretty smart making an asinine comment like that when you have to go out in public in the city you live and work in.

  • Joe Smith

Anyone can be book smart like Katie but it takes a lot to be a human being and Katie has no idea how to be one. I can’t believe a person can be so hurtful towards another human being who is hurting from a family loss.

  • vick brah

The one thing I would love is for Tom Brady to tweet her and tell her how pathetic she is. RIP Tevin.

    • kelly

good one! she has no soul or no brain either way she needs help!!

  • CCBF

Was she wrong for saying it? Absolutely. It was low and classless. However, I’m more disturbed by some of the reaction tweets she has been getting. The people who are saying she should be killed or raped are even more disgusting than she is, IMO. Telling her she is a horrible human being is one thing. Wishing someone stabs her or gives her a “rape baby” is inhuman. Let’s rise above her level, people, not sink down to it.

I’m not defending her at all. I’m only asking for people not to sink to her level with their tweets.

So, it’s been a day…if this woman has any regret whatsoever, then where is the public apology?

  • jaxxmjd

Living in B’More ought to be fun for her now.

  • MailOrderLesbian

She’s a douche for making a joke in poor taste. But whoever tried to get her fired by writing her employer is just as big of douch, if not more so.

  • megan

People saying she shouldn’t lose her job yet i believe she should. She represents JHU and her message was foul and unacceptable.

  • Donnie Nickerson

WHO CARES PEOPLE…they are igonorant people all around us. She is entitle to her own opinion and freedom of speech. Iam not saying I agree with it but this is part of living in a free country. Some people will say nice things and some may not. There just words….She dosent deserve to loose her job and the person who wrote her job is just as bad as her.
